Born into one of the biggest Mafia families
in America, Helena went through all the traumas
one can expect from that dubious distinction.
From a kidnapping as a child, to watching
her whole family slaughtered at her cousin's
wedding, there's little doubt as to why she
became such a vengeful spirit.
She was trained by her
bodyguard, and eked
out her revenge on the
Consiglieri and the
other Mafia head who had
wiped out the Bertinelli's
for a bigger piece of the
pie. With the deaths
of Omerta and Mandragora,
Helena developed
her Huntress persona and
moved to New York
City to continue fighting
crime. Eventually
she moved back to Gotham,
where she operates
without the backing of
Batman. She does not
abide by his "no killing"
rule,
and despite her efforts
to win him over,
she has always been the
black sheep of the
Gotham vigilante set.
Huntress ran across Sasha when both of them
were on the trail of an escaped Slab inmate,
Cucilla, after she had been "Jokerized"
and released by the Clown Prince of Crime
along with most of the inmates at the Slab.
Sasha had to keep Helena from killing or
badly wounding the other woman, realizing
that things did not add up with her. As it
turns out, Cucilla was not a criminal, but
a plant by a government agency to keep tabs
on criminals in the Slab. Sasha and Helena
did not exactly see eye to eye, and there
was a lot of stare downs and sarcastic quips
levelled between them.
